Taking a Break from a Relationship

Taking a break in a relationship is not an alternative for sorting out your issues. Because if you break when you are having problems, they'll bother you when you meet again. When you love someone to such an extent that nothing else matters, you definitely expect the person to love you in the same way. This is exactly where all your problems take root. Couples start taking each other for granted and gradually fall out of love considering their ego bigger than their love for each other. At this point of time you need to talk to each other, and sort out your problems, before you decide to break and give some time to your relationship.

Why Take a Break?

Does, a temporary break in a relationship work? Adjustments and compromises play a major role in holding relationships together. You have to forgive and forget your partner's mistakes and love them anyway, if you want things to work. If you think a break in relationships is the only way to save it, then you can consider it too. Take a look at some of the reasons for taking a break.

  • If you have just started seeing someone and things are moving too fast with the person showing early signs of commitment, you can talk about taking a break from the relationship by just staying friends for some time. This will help you consider not only the chances of getting back together but you will also realize if both of you are compatible as lovers.
  • If you have fights for small reasons, where either of you can adjust but you think the other one should, can lead to serious problems ahead. You can fall out of love and get bored of spending time with each other. When you don't have topics to talk about and land up arguing for no reason, is also a hint for a break.
  • If the other person is not giving you enough space and acts over possessive for no reason or even gets suspicious too soon, talk to your partner and try to make them understand that faith and trust are the base of any relationship. Trust is an important factor in a healthy relationship and if you can't build your trust in someone, you should give the relationship some time.
  • Every relationship needs some amount of compromise from both sides to make it work. But when you feel that you are the only person on the compromising end, bitterness and resentment towards each other might creep in and disturb the relationship. If you are at a stage like this it is better to talk to your partner and let him/her know about your situation instead of jumping into conclusions and making rash decisions of taking a break.
What does It Mean?

Taking a break in a relationship can save the relationship from destroying completely. Taking a break does not mean to take some time off from your partner and try your luck with someone else. It also doesn't mean that both of you don't love each other anymore and can live alone. You can give yourself some time to rethink about the issues that led you to take a break, and find ways and means to work things out. Try to keep yourself busy, spend time with your friends and family more than with him/her. Instead of being frustrated about the whole situation, try to alleviate any negative feelings from your mind and be optimistic about your relationship.

When you know things are getting bitter between the two of you, you should communicate with your partner as this will make him/her aware of the problems you are having. Both of you can make a common decision on how to solve your problems, as taking a break is of no use without resolving your differences. Because if you get back together and find the same issues crawling back between you, it can be more frustrating.

Communication is the only way you can discuss the changes that have come up in your relationship. If discussing the problems does not lead to any solution, think about taking this extreme step about a break. It is important to make him/her understand what the reason is and how is taking a break from a relationship a good idea. It can be a difficult job but you need to handle it with care.

When you are about to tell your partner the reason for the break, you need to sit with him/her and gradually make them understand the point. Discuss what brought you close to each other and what made you fall in love. Talk about the common interests both of you share and love to do when you are together. Tell the things that have been bothering you lately and ask him/her about the same. Convince your partner that not seeing each other for some time will want both of you to get back to each other, thereby strengthening your relation. Tell them you don't have a choice and that you've made your decision. Come to a common understanding and stick to your commitment.
